Apps that lock your phone until you drink water

A new kind of app blocker: the apps you scroll stay locked until you drink some water. Here's how they work, what separates a good one from a gimmick, and what's available on iPhone and Android.

How drink-to-unlock apps work

They borrow the system tools phones already have for limiting apps. On iPhone that's Apple's Screen Time framework, the same one parental controls use. On Android it's usage access plus a screen that covers the app you opened. When it's time for a break, the app you picked won't open until you've had a drink, and the drink is usually checked with your camera.

The idea is simple: you already reach for your phone dozens of times a day. Each time becomes a reminder you can't swipe away, so the water actually gets drunk.

What to look for

  1. How the drink is checked. Some apps trust a button tap, some want a photo, some watch you drink. A tap is easy to skip; a quick on-camera sip is hard to fake and still takes only seconds.
  2. Where your camera footage goes. The best apps check the drink on your phone and never upload the video. Read the privacy policy.
  3. Android support. Most drink-to-unlock apps are iPhone-only, because Apple's Screen Time tools made them easier to build there first.
  4. Price. Several of these apps need a subscription for blocking to work at all.
  5. A finish line. If the apps relock forever, you'll uninstall it within a week. A daily goal that ends the blocking once you've had enough water keeps it bearable.

How Waterbreak works

  1. Pick the apps that eat your day. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, games, anything. Waterbreak locks them on a rhythm you set, for example every 45 minutes.
  2. Take a sip on camera. When they lock, open Waterbreak and drink for a few seconds. The camera checks that it's a real drink, with your face and a bottle in view, entirely on your phone.
  3. Get back to it. Your apps unlock for a while, and every bottle you finish counts toward your daily goal. Once you hit the goal, they stay open for the rest of the day.

On top of the blocking, Waterbreak turns the habit into a game: a daily streak, daily and weekly leaderboards, and keys from every bottle that open a chest of collectable pixel sea monsters.

Where Waterbreak is different

Not sure you want your apps locked? Start with long breaks, such as every 90 minutes, and shorten them once the habit sticks.
